How To Be An Expert

What does it take to be an expert? What is it that separates top achievers and the rest of the world? Could it be that some people are just ‘born with it’ and some are genetically predisposed to being average? Will you find some answers in this post? Well, read on.
As I was reading over the web a few days ago, I came across an article that caught my interest. I don’t usually fall for catchy titles, as I have often realised that the title does not always match the contents.
However, this article was most certainly worth my time. At least I think so. So here I am sharing it with you. So what was the title of this article? It was ‘How to be an expert.’
The graph below beautifully sums up the article.
The author, Kathy writes “It turns out that rather than being naturally gifted at music or math or chess or whatever, a superior performer most likely has a gift for concentration, dedication, and a simple desire to keep getting better.”
Of course, there are many factors which can influence what we become in life, but one of the most important key factors is the ‘hot desire’ to achieve whatever we have set our minds on. The hot desire will then push us to take action. It will push us to places unknown, it will push us to find answers and keep trying. And as we continue to try, one thing is certain; we will get better. For as long as we stay on course, improved results are guaranteed.
Without the desire and the dedication, whether we have the talent or not, we all end up either as amateurs or drop outs. How many talented people do you know who are not experts and how many so called ‘untalented’ people do you know who are experts?
Even though I am aware that dedication is not everything, it really goes a long way. It can mean the difference between being an amateur and an expert. Many sportsmen and sportswomen would not have been successful had they not had the ‘rage to master’ or the ‘hot desire’ to get there. Please note that I have marked the words ‘rage to master’ in bold. There is a whole world of a difference between someone who wants to master a skill and someone who has the ‘rage to master’ a skill. The one who has the ‘rage’ is more likely to get there.
So it is time to do a bit of self assessment, and analyse how truly dedicated you are to your dreams. Do you have a wishy-washy desire to get better or do you have the ‘rage to master’?
If you are a drop out or an amateur you now know what to do to become an expert or at least to get closer to becoming one. The goal is to at least move up the graph.
By the dedication you choose to put in, you are also choosing whether you will become an expert, a drop out or an amateur.

Hot desire is a great expression. Dedication to one’s desire really does make the difference - especially when it arises from truly inspired action.
You reminded me of this quote, by someone who really gave the word ‘dedication’ meaning… Mahatma Gandhi, who said “It is because we have at the present moment everybody claiming the right of conscience without going through any discipline whatsoever that there is so much untruth being delivered to a bewildered world.”
